Winter Protective Style Regimen

Here is my winter protective style regimen. This post supplements the video above, so please watch the video in addition to reading this post.

Wash Schedule:

• Frequency - I wash my hair every two weeks (or once a week if my scalp gets itchy).
• Cornrow Removal - I unbraid each cornrow and thoroughly comb out all of the shedded hair. If you do not remove the shedded hair before you wash, your hair will get tangled and matted.
• Shampoo - I shampoo three times. First, with diluted clarifying shampoo. Then twice with diluted moisturizing shampoo.
• Deep Condition - To save time, I mix my reconstructor and deep conditioner together. I apply and comb the mix through my hair, then deep condition under my hair steamer for 40 minutes.
• Leave-in Conditioner - I use a liquid and creamy leave-in and comb them through my hair.
• Drying Technique - I let my hair air dry hanging down, with a silk scarf wrapped around my neck.
• Edges - I apply a heat protectant and flat iron the hair I leave out. Although I have a lace front wig, I use it like an instant weave. For me, this looks more natural than having the wig sit on my forehead.

Daily Care:

• I remove the wig at night and spray the cornrows with braid spray mixed with Infusium 23 leave-in. I seal with either coconut oil or castor oil.
• I comb the wig daily to remove tangles. I do not apply any product to the wig.

I have a different regimen for the Spring/Summer seasons and will update my regimen when the time comes.

Please let me know if you have any questions in the Comments section.

Hi Kibibi!
I know you posted this a few months ago, but I am a recent subcriber of your YouTube channel and blog. =) YaaaY! Anyway, my question is: how exactly do you dye the lace on your wig? I tried to look up "AJamericanDiva" on Youtube, but I couldn't find her. :(
Since autumn is right around the corner, I want to step up my protective styling. Last winter, I was having trouble covering the lace. By the way, I am transistioning from my relaxer & I found some really cute curly half-wigs...now I need to find some curly lace wigs.
Thanks so much!

I used RIT dye to dye the lace.

Okay, thanks! I assume you just turned the cap inside out and dipped the lace in a bowl of water w/ the dye? Am I correct?

Yes, that's right. Keep in mind that the wig had synthetic hair, so I'm not sure how the dye would affect human hair.

As summer sun was fading my rhemy hair
wig, I colored it black with Perfection 10 by Clairol. It turned out incredibly soft and shiny. However, human rhemy hair can be a
disaster in untrained hands. MsKibibi
when you use Rit dye on synthetic hair, do you use hot, warm, or cold
water? With your gorgeous hair, I can't imagine you wearing a wig.

What type of braid spray do you use?

MsKibibi said...

I used hot water per the RIT dye instructions.

BRX Braid spray.

Hello Ms. Kibibi!!

You stated that you use the braid spray mix daily and that you seal your hair. I was wondering how you sealed your hair while it was still cornrolled? Thanks for your help!!

I think your regimen makes total sense. How do you attach the wig in front? Do you use glue or tape? or just pins. I'm going to buy a wig soon and I need some direction. :) You should make a detailed video of how you attach the wig.

Hi! I'm a first time visitor to your site and a soon to be subscriber of your youtube channel. =) I was wondering if you had any suggestions for winter hair protection for those of us who choose not to wear wigs. I don't have the money for them and I'm not a fan of weave or wigs to begin with because they break my hair out. Thanks for your suggestions.
