My Growth and Setbacks 2003-2010

Having the Hair Blues

I'm a little bummed about the potential setback caused by the Mane n' Tail Detangler.  I won't know for sure if it caused a setback until I do my relaxer next month and get my hair blow dried and flat ironed.  But I can already feel enough of a difference in my hair to know that something is not right.

It's very disheartening to experience a setback, especially when I used a seemingly harmless product that others have raved about.  This isn't like the time I used henna and indigo to color my hair black (LOL).  Now, that I knew was a risky change in my regimen.

This will certainly affect any future products I try.  As if I wasn't paranoid enough about trying new products (LOL).  On the positive note, my short term goal of reaching waist length by December 2011 is still feasibly.  Even if I cut another 3" (rough estimate) in October when I relax my hair, I still have enough time to regain that length.  This is why its called my "hair journey."  I go through different phases and have ups and downs.  You might go through the same thing, so take heart, you are not alone.

It's just hair, yet it's not just hair.  It's about setting goals and working towards them.  So like any goal in life that you fall short of, hair goals also have an emotional effect on you.

Are you experiencing a hair setback?

Hey don't feel too bad but if my hair was as lovely as yours and I had found the best regimen for my hair I wouldn't want to do anything new to jeopardize my hair. That's just my feeling. Your avid fan!

Great advice. You would think that after always having setbacks, I would just stick to what I know works. lol But as my hair changes, I have to find something new to accommodate that change.

I just wrote a post on setbacks. For me, it seems like I was battling setback after setback for the past couple of years. The good news is that it looks like I'm finally on my way back. Best of all, I learned so much from my previous mishaps that I'm almost certain to avoid severe setbacks going forward.

I really love your blog and the helpful information that you give. My hair always grows longer on one side then the other and I'm wondering if I should continue to trim it evenly or is that hindering my growth process? Is this a setback? Just curious about your thoughts on this. I know you'll reach you hair goal and I love your way of thinking about this hair journey :-)

My hair is coming out in clumps and I can't figure out why. It's pretty long, but now it's about half as thick as it used to be. I'm almost to the point of desperation.

How is your hair changing? Is that something as a newbie I'm to look out for; changes in my hair?

Nadege - Glad you hear you're making a comeback from the setbacks.

Blessed Tresses - Try to figure out why one side is shorter. Are you manipulating that side more often (ex while wrapping), do you sleep on that more, is that side a tighter curl pattern than the rest (which is possible). Until you figure out the cause, you will likely find yourself trimming more than necessary to even up the length. This will indeed affect your growth.

StinkPantz - Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that. Are you under more stress than usual right now? Stress is the silent killer in a lot of ways. It causes illnesses and can also cause hair problems.

Nix - Perhaps I should have said that what my hair needs is changing. My hair itself is not changing. Sorry for the confusion. I felt that my hair needed something to help me detangle it before I washed. Since I've been wearing mostly braidouts this summer, I wasn't combing it daily So on wash day, I wanted something to help me detangle.

Thank you MsKibibi~I think it may be because I sleep on that side more. I'll have to try to pay attention to this and change it up. Thanks again.

Hey girl. OMG, I am in the same boat as you are right now. I am starting to think us coarse hair divas have to be really careful about our product selections because I have coarse hair too and nothing has caused me more problems than a hair product that you would think would not cause someone major problems.

I too recently experienced a two inch or more setback from using Kenra "moisturizing" conditioner which left my hair so dry and brittle it caused my hair to have incomplete splits up and down my strands! My coarse natural hair is so allergic to protein it isn't even funny.

Good luck to you though. I am so sick of these setbacks from using products....

I have been transitioning from relaxed to texlaxed hair since the beginning of the year and my setback came from trying to manipulate and treat my hair the same way I did when relaxed. Caused a TON of breakage and my edges are shorter than the rest of my hair! I have had to re-educate myself on how to handle 3 textures (NG, texlaxed hair and relaxed ends) and revamp my regimen and products to accomodate them. I also learned that I cannot stretch as long as I used to. Caused too much breakage.
